I have been an Indian movie buff for as long as I can remember. While I like what they call a good masala Bollywood movie, In 2021, I discovered some great real life stories adapted into an Indian movie. These movies will move you, inspire you and sometimes bring you to tears.

While we still can’t go to the movie theatres like the good old days, there is always streaming to the rescue-

5. Sardar Udham on Amazon Prime Video- As a child I heard the stories about Jalianwala Bagh massacre from my maternal grandmother who was a native of Amritsar, Punjab in India. My grandmother would describe it in such excruciating detail that the incident was itched in my memory forever. One can only expect this masterpiece from Sujit Sarkar and Vicky Kaushal. Speechless to watch how they captured it on celluloid. A must watch.

4. Ladies First on Netflix tells an incredible story of Deepika Kumari, an Indian Archery champion who was born in poverty and rose to International sports arena all on her own grit and determination. what is really touching about this story is how Deepika beats all odds despite lack of top notch coaches, nutritionists, mindset coaches who are accessible in abundance to the athletes in the west. A true daughter of India who brought pride to the motherland.

3. Saina on Amazon Prime Video - An awe inspiring real life story of the professional badminton player Sania Nehwal who reaches the top spot by sheer determination and resilience riding through all the ups and downs. Very convincingly played by Parineeti Chopra and a treat for shuttle lovers.

2. Shershaah on Amazon Prime Video is a true story of a brave Indian soldier Capt. Vikram Batra who played a pivotal role during the 1999 Indo-Pak Kaargil war. In the backdrop is a beautiful love story of a young girl falling in love with the soldier who still lives her life in his memory. I usually do not enjoy war movies but this one is a real gem of an exception. This is one of the best work I have seen from Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani.

  1. Udaan on Amazon Prime Video- For many weeks I didn’t watch this movie since the title is confusing with an old movie by the same title. Don’t make that mistake, this movie will grip you through the plot. This is the story of a boy born in a remote village in India who went on to become an entrepreneur owning a low cost airline. Based on the book ‘Simply fly”, it’s an awe inspiring story of Capt. G.R. Gopinath who dreamed to democratize flying in India.
